Helping Accountants Drive Bottom Line on Climate Change

Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI) has recently launched an initiative in partnership with GPL Network (GPL) to gear-up accountants to provide climate change related services.

The aim of this program is to educate and give accountants the resource capability to deliver comprehensive carbon audits, in addition to advising on risks and opportunities imposed by an incoming price on carbon pollution.

GPL provides training and professional development services to hundreds of accountancy firms to improve profitability and enhance growth. The company’s input and oversight will ensure that the initiative is tailored and delivered to meet the needs of accountants.

As a first step, the accounting firms must undertake a carbon audit to become NoCO2 (or carbon neutral) certified. This process engages the firms first hand in the process of managing carbon emissions; showing them the business case between pursuing emission reductions within their business, or purchasing carbon offsets.

As part of the initiative, a series of seminars and workshops co-delivered by CRI’s and its partner GPL will educate accountants on emissions trading, carbon pricing and the complexities faced when measuring and monitoring carbon footprints across different industries which will be rolled out in 2010. Accountants using the program will also be able to advise clients on the risks and benefits of emissions trading from insights gained from carbon audits.
